Hydration appreciation
In the autumn issue of Healthy Pet Guide, we suggested ways of helping your pet maintain a healthy weight. One tip highlighted the importance of hydration in aiding digestion – but drinking water offers many more benefits for our little loved ones…
Encouraging pets to get drinking is especially important for cats, as they don’t have high thirst drives – in the wild, they’d get most of their water intake from their food. Drinking water will help flush out toxins that may build up, which can cause kidney or urinary tract disease – research shows this can sadly be a leading cause of death in older cats. And, for our canine companions, water helps keep their noses moist and able to pick up scents.
So, as you can see, regular drinking helps prevent health problems as well as an unpleasant vet bill. But how do we ensure our pets are getting enough of the good stuff?
5 tips for encouraging your pet to stay hydrated
Every animal is different and will have their own preferences (plus, cats are notorious picky drinkers) – so be prepared to try a few different ways of providing water to find your cat or dog’s favourite way of drinking. Try out the tips below for H2O harmony!
If you’re particularly worried about your pet’s water consumption, it’s always worth visiting the vet for specialist advice.
1. Keep it fresh
Providing a fresh source of water is key to keeping your furry friend healthy and hydrated – after all, it’s not very inviting to sip from a bowl where the water’s been hanging around. Our cats’ and dogs’ incredible senses of smell will pick up any hints of staleness straight away.
2. Location, location, location
Depending on the age or needs of your pet – for example, if they have limited mobility or need to drink often due to a medical condition – it’s worth popping a few water sources around your house, including near their beds.
3. On the move
Make sure you take a bottle of water with you on walks with your canine companion – all that exploring is thirsty work!
4. Mix it up
You could try and introduce more wet food into your pet’s diet – as the name suggests, it has a much higher moisture content than dry food.
5. Go with the flow
Anyone who’s seen a cat drinking from a dripping tap or a dog playing with a sprinkler will know that our pets absolutely love moving water. This is down to their animal instincts to drink from streams and rivers – plus, cats have near-sightedness issues, so can find it hard to see still water. Which leads us nicely onto…
How our pet fountains can help
Here at Closer Pets, our products are designed to give you a deeper understanding of your companions’ needs, and our pet drinking fountains are here to make hydration one of the highlights of the day.
We’ve already established that cats and dogs prefer running water. So, having a source of fresh running water will surely grab their attention, while providing naturally oxygenated, tasty water.
Our modern pet fountains have multi-height reservoirs to mimic natural, flowing water, and make them a suitable watering hole for moggies and doggies alike. They’re more hygienic than a traditional water bowl, as the circulating water can stop any nasty build-ups in their tracks.
They also include filters that remove impurities from tap water and trap any dirt or fur, meaning the water will taste and smell better for your discerning drinkers. What’s more, they can also keep the water 1-2 degrees cooler than a traditional water bowl to ensure your closest companions will be fully refreshed.
Lastly, our pets need different quantities of water, depending on their size and the type of food they eat. By offering up to six litres, your four-legged friends will never go thirsty – they can dip in and out as they please, whether you’re at home or out and about. Not to mention the fact it means you don’t have to keep refilling the bowl every five minutes – especially if you have several pets!
